Melissa & Joe’s Wedding at the Canary Shed, Burnham On Crouch, Essex.
On the 20th of September, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Melissa and Joe’s incredible wedding at The Canary Shed in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. This unique barn venue is fast becoming one of the most talked-about wedding spaces in the county — and for good reason. From the rolling vineyards to the rustic wooden backdrops and that iconic indoor barn space, it’s a dream for both couples and photographers.
Melissa’s morning was full of excitement as she got ready surrounded by her bridal party. Her hair and makeup team — @makeupbysophie_ and @bridalbeautybymegan_ — worked their magic, creating a beautiful look that lasted all day. One of my favourite shots was capturing that perfect misty spray moment — a little touch of artistry in the morning light.
Meanwhile, Joe and his groomsmen were busy preparing, pinning on buttonholes and sharing laughs which was lovely to capture. I also styled some flat-lay details of their accessories to help tell the full story of their day!
Melissa and Joe chose to hold their ceremony outdoors at The Canary Shed, surrounded by the vineyard and the rustic charm that makes this venue so unique. The atmosphere was relaxed and personal, with friends and family gathered closely, creating such a warm and intimate feel. The backdrop of the Essex countryside gave me plenty of opportunities to capture those candid, emotional moments as they exchanged their vows.
Instead of traditional confetti, the couple went for a fun bubble exit — and it couldn’t have worked better. Guests lined the pathway, blowing streams of bubbles as Melissa and Joe made their way through. The light caught the bubbles beautifully, giving the photos a dreamy, playful look that perfectly matched the vibe of the day. It was a brilliant twist on a wedding tradition and made for some of my favourite shots from the ceremony.
After the ceremony and some time for Melissa and Joe to mingle with their guests, we slipped away for portraits around the venue. The Canary Shed is one of those rare places where you’re spoiled for choice, every corner offers something different.
We started in the vineyards, using the natural light and open space for some relaxed images that felt true to their day. The rustic wooden doors on the grounds made for a striking backdrop, and this is also where we created some of the motion blur images I had been excited to try. These shots added a touch of creativity while still keeping the focus on the couple.
Inside the barn, which is the signature feature of The Canary Shed, we captured a series of portraits that made full use of the venue’s character. The textures, light, and atmosphere gave us so much to work with, and Melissa and Joe were completely at ease, which really shines through in the final images.
The group shots were kept lighthearted and fun, exactly how Melissa and Joe wanted them. A lot of Joe’s family had travelled over from America, which made the photos even more special, capturing not just their closest circle but also those who had come from far and wide to celebrate.
The reception atmosphere at The Canary Shed was electric. Melissa and Joe made an incredible entrance into the barn, greeted with cheers before Melissa shared a touching first dance with her father. Soon after, the couple had their own first dance, setting the tone for the evening ahead.
I stayed until 9pm to capture the full party atmosphere, and the dancefloor did not disappoint! With entertainment from @bears_weddings and @haloband_uk, the barn came alive with music, laughter, and some unforgettable moves.
Melissa and Joe’s day was everything a wedding should be: relaxed, full of joy, and personal to them. Photographing at The Canary Shed in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex is always an amazing experience, and this wedding was no exception.
